Postdoctoral Position in Inverse Kinematics Surrogate Measurements at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

11 March 2022

Posting: https://www.llnl.gov/join-our-team/careers/find-your-job/all/all/3743990000200780

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to play a leading role in developing and conducting experiments to indirectly constrain the properties of neutron-induced reactions important to stockpile stewardship and nuclear astrophysics. You will use the GODDESS (Gamma-detector ORRUBA: Dual Detectors for Experimental Structure Studies) particle-g spectrometer to conduct experiments at the ATLAS facility at Argonne National Laboratory and FRIB at Michigan State University. Your responsibilities will include setting up and participating in experiments, analyzing the resulting data, and interpreting and publishing the results. You will also be responsible for the design and implementation of new experimental equipment, such as recoil and beam-tracking detectors. This opportunity is in the Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Technologies Group in the Nuclear and Chemicals Sciences (NACS) Division.

In this role you will
• Conduct surrogate-reaction measurements at accelerator-based facilities.
• Perform data analysis and interpret the results of experiments.
• Lead development of recoil and beam-tracking detector systems.
• Develop simulations of detector performance and validate simulations using calibration sources and experimental results.
• Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
• Work in close collaboration with colleagues at Argonne National Laboratory, Michigan State University, and the broader nuclear-science community to perform measurements on radioactive nuclei.
• Provide technical contributions to the development of future nuclear-physics experiments.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
• PhD in a nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, nuclear engineering, nuclear chemistry or related field.
• Advanced knowledge with accelerator-based experiments and radiation counting using charged-particle and gamma-ray detectors.
• Experience in nuclear-reaction measurements involving light ions.
• Advanced knowledge in the design, construction, and operation of gas-filled recoil or beam-tracking detectors.
• Programming experience in C++, Python, and/or other programming languages.
• Experience performing data analysis and simulations with ROOT, GEANT4, or similar programs.
• Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature in physics or a related field.
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Position Information This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.

Three postdoc positions in Nuclear Structure Theory at York

08 March 2022

The nuclear theory group at the Department of Physics, University of York invites applications for three postdoctoral research associate positions starting in early 2022. Prospective candidates can apply before 18 March at

https://jobs.york.ac.uk/wd/plsql/wdportal.showjob?pwebsiteid=3885&pwebpageid=476291

Research Associate 1 (Available for 32 months): This role is part of a Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Consolidated Grant 2021 "Theme 4 – DFT Approach to Nuclear Collective Excitations" and contribute to build up theoretical research in support of UK nuclear science. You will work on developing novel and advanced nuclear density functionals with the overarching goal of improving their precision and predictive power. You will build theoretical tools and codes that allow the study of excited collective states, transition probabilities, and decay lifetimes. You will perform extensive calculations across the Segrè chart to include collective observables in building novel nuclear density functionals.

Research Associate 2 (Available for 48 months): This role is part of a Leverhulme Research Grant 2021 "Designer nuclei and molecules for study of the fundamental laws of the universe" and support worldwide activity in the studies of fundamental interactions. You will determine nuclear-DFT symmetry-violating anapole and exotic nuclear moments that are essential to interpret measurements of hyperfine structures in atoms and molecules.

Research Associate 3 (Available for 24 months): This role is part of a Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Grant for Developing STFC nuclear physics priorities "Symmetry-restored two-centre self-consistent approach to fission with arbitrary deformations, orientations, and distance of fragments" and will help set the stage for long-term fission studies at York. You will conduct targeted development of computational infrastructure that allows for solving static superfluid DFT equations for all shapes of fissioning nuclei using a two-centre 3D harmonic-oscillator basis with arbitrary relative distances and orientations.
