Open PhD Position and CERN Fellow in Experimental Nuclear Physics at ISOLDE

31 March 2017

The recently formed EIBT-LS collaboration currently offers openings for a PhD position and one CERN Fellowship in experimental nuclear physics.

The EIBT-LS is based on a new type of ion trap for laser spectroscopy of short-lived radioactive nuclides. While preserving the high resolution of conventional collinear laser spectroscopy, this novel approach promises substantial gains in experimental sensitivity in order to study the most exotic nuclides available at contemporary radioactive ion beam facilities such as ISOLDE at CERN. This project is supported by an ERC Starting Grant.

The successful candidates will participate in the design, construction, and commissioning of the novel apparatus as well as the first online measurements. Their work at CERN will hence combine the fields of ion traps, laser spectroscopy, and the science for short-lived radionuclides.

The EIBT-LS group at CERN is closely linked to collaboration partners at the University of Greifswald, the University of Heidelberg, and the Technische Universität Darmstadt. The successful PhD candidate will be affiliated to one of these universities.

Interested candidates for these positions are invited to contact Stephan Malbrunot-Ettenauer (stephan.ettenauer@cern.ch).

Candidates for the PhD position should furthermore submit their applications at https://jobs.web.cern.ch/join-us/doctoral-student-programme under the project code ‘EP6282’. The CERN doctoral student programme is open for applications twice per year. The next open call has its deadline on 12 April 2017.

Call for Postdoctoral Fellow: Internationa Research Center for Nuclei and Particles in Cosmos (IRCNPC) and International Research Center for Big Bang Cosmology and Element Genesis (IRCBBC)

14 March 2017

IRCNPC and IRCBBC of Beihang University at Beijing is asking for applications for Post Doctoral Fellows. The term is for two years and the salary per year is 300,000 RMB (~US$43,400, ~40,700 Euro, or 4,980,000 JP Yen). The dead line for application is May 20, 2017.

IRCNPC is directed by I. Tanihata and promotes experimental and theoretical studies of nuclei and hadrons using world wide facility such as GSI Germany, RCNP Japan, and IMP Lanzhou. Applicants who are interested in studies of nuclear structure and/or nuclear astrophysics are encouraged to apply. Also the research using ultra-cold neutrons are within the scope.

IRCBBC is directed by T. Kajino and promotes theoretical studies on Big Bang cosmology and element genesis. We seek for a few postdoctoral research associates in the field of theoretical nuclear astrophysics and cosmology who are interested in explosive nucleosynthesis and neutrino physics of the early Universe and supernovae. These two research centers promote international and interdisciplinary collaboration by bringing together experimental nuclear physicists, astronomers, cosmochemists, cosmic ray physicists and so on as well as theoretical astrophysicists to Beihang University.

The condition for applications are; 1. An applicant has to be 35 years old or younger on June 30, 2017. 2. An applicant has to be a graduate of the renowned university. 3. An applicant has PhD. 4. The term of the contract is for two years and he/she has to stay in Beihang more than 20 month in this period. 5. An applicant has to be fluent in Chinese or in English.

The following documents have to be submitted for application. An applicant may apply for the position before obtaining all the necessary documents but all documents have to be ready by May 20, 2017.

  1. Application form (the form will be supplied later).
  2. A copy of your ID or passport.
  3. A copy of the PhD certificate.
  4. CV.
  5. List of research achievements.
  6. Two letters of recommendation.

Please contact either director if you are interested in the fellowship program.
