An STFC-funded experimental nuclear physics postdoctoral research position is available at the University of Surrey. The successful candidate will be an integral member of the experimental nuclear physics group and will be involved in the activities aimed to study the structure of heavy neutron-rich nuclei. These activities include exploring radioactive beam facilities such as ISOLDE, RIKEN, GSI.
You will join an established group studying isomeric and beta-unstable nuclei at the limits of experimental accessibility, using gamma-ray, charged-particle and storage-ring techniques. Candidates should have a proven track record of research contributions in experimental nuclear physics. Experience in gamma-ray spectroscopic techniques is essential.
The successful candidate will work within the Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Physics, where research includes fundamental theoretical and experimental nuclear physics, radiation physics and applications. For further information about the Centre please see http://www.ph.surrey.ac.uk/cnrp.

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position funded by the ERC Starting Grant project DoRES which addresses nuclear reactions of importance for the creation of elements in stars. The successful candidate will perform numerical simulations of nucleosynthesis processes in stars and stellar explosions. In particular, the work will focus on the origin of the heavy elements, for example in massive stars and core collapse supernovae.
The successful applicant will have or will be about to obtain a PhD in computational astrophysics, nuclear astrophysics, or a related discipline. Prior experience in using and developing nucleosynthesis and stellar evolution codes is essential. The candidate would be expected to interact closely with the experimental nuclear astrophysics research programme, with the aim of exploring the astrophysical impact of experimental results and to identify key goals for future work.
The position is available from September 2017 for 3 years, with a possible extension until 31 May 2021, when the ERC funding period ends.

Post-doctoral Fellow in Nuclear Physics M/F
Duties:
Working within the “Nuclear and Particle Physics (NPP)” group at the FIPPS (FIssion Product Prompt gamma-ray Spectrometer) instrument you will develop and implement ancillary detectors and systems to complement the existing array of Ge clover detectors and to enlarge the applications of this new instrument. Besides possible ideas proposed by the candidate we are considering the following projects:
a LaBr3:Ce detector array for ultrafast timing experiments
a setup for magnetic moment measurements
use of polarized neutron beams for generation of spin-aligned capture states
a setup for conversion electron spectroscopy
a dedicated target chamber for noble gas targets
Further you will:
Establish new scientific collaborations by promoting nuclear spectroscopy and neutron-induced fission experiments performed at ILL;
Pursue your personal research programme in nuclear spectroscopy or nuclear fission.
You will be trained with the nuclear spectroscopy program at the NPP instruments to get full awareness of the scientific possibilities of the whole instrumental suite for experiments involving fission and nuclear spectroscopy.
Qualifications and experience:
You have a PhD in physics with a good knowledge of nuclear spectroscopy.
You have a strong experience in one or several of the following topics: Ge, Si, or LaBr3(Ce) detectors, measurement of nuclear lifetimes or magnetic moments, conversion electron spectroscopy, simulation of experimental setups including detectors and magnetic fields, digital data acquisition systems.
The post represents an excellent opportunity for a young scientist to develop expertise, broaden experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world.
Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
Notes:
Post-Doctoral contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 to 18-month period.
Only candidates holding a PhD obtained less than 2 years ago are eligible for Post-doctoral positions.

Job Description:
The UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application. NPL has a vacancy for a research scientist to work in the neutron metrology section. The work will involve working on a wide variety of projects with partners from industry and academia, including the measurement of nuclear data for applications in the nuclear industry, and supporting instrument development and characterisation. In addition, NPL is aiming to invest in a new particle accelerator and the job holder would be involved in helping to build the business case and draw up the technical specifications.
The job holder would be working closely with the NPL / Surrey University Professor of Nuclear Metrology. Contributions to scientific journals and conferences are encouraged.
A degree in physics and a PhD in experimental nuclear physics or accelerator science are essential. Post-doctoral research experience would be useful.

Postdoctoral Position in Experimental Nuclear Physics: University of Massachusetts Lowell

The Nuclear Physics group at the University of Massachusetts Lowell has an immediate Post-Doctoral opening to help exploit new opportunities in experimental research both at major national user facilities and at our Radiation Laboratory. The current research in the group is in fundamental nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics, and in detector R&D and applied nuclear science using emerging scintillators and segmented Ge detectors. The Radiation Laboratory on campus has a 1-MW research reactor and a 5.5-MV CN Van de Graaff accelerator. The university is situated in the historic city of Lowell, on the Merrimack river, a half-hour northwest of Boston.
We are looking for recent PhD graduates who want to take challenging roles in the existing programs, with a primary focus on characterizing, optimizing and utilizing new scintillators for nuclear science, but who will also be encouraged to pursue their own research interests. A Ph.D in experimental nuclear physics or a closely related field is required. Experience with state-of-the-art nuclear detectors and techniques, as well as multi-parameter digital data acquisition and analysis of accelerator-based experiments, is desirable.
The successful candidates will be integral members of the research group of Professors Partha Chowdhury, C.J. (Kim) Lister and Andrew Rogers. They will be expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students, with possible teaching opportunities in the department for qualified candidates.
The appointments will be for two years contingent on continued external funding.
