Postdoctoral Fellow position in experimental nuclear physics at the Australian National University, Canberra

18 August 2022

Applications are sought for a Postdoctoral Fellow in experimental nuclear physics at the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra. The position is offered on a full-time basis, for a period of two years, anticipated to commence from 1 October 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Research School of Physics at ANU hosts the leading accelerator-based, fundamental nuclear physics research facility in Australia. The Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) is a national facility established to support world-class research activities across diverse themes related to nuclear science and its applications. Our staff and students have an international reputation for undertaking world-class research into the nature of atomic nuclei and development of unique technical infrastructure to do so.

The successful applicant will perform research related to the recently funded Australian Research Council Discovery Project DP210101201, "Nuclear vibrations under scrutiny in near-spherical and deformed nuclei". They will work closely with the Project CIs--Prof Andrew Stuchbery, Prof Greg Lane and Dr AJ Mitchell--and their students, as well international collaborators and facility Technical Staff. The research will primarily employ nucleon-transfer reactions and Coulomb excitation to address the science goals of the project, making use of the Enge magnetic spectrometer and CAESAR array of HPGe and LaBr3 gamma-ray detectors at HIAF. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also have the opportunity to contribute to other research programs of the research group, supervision of research students and coursework teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will join a research group within the Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications that values diversity and inclusion, and we are committed to providing equal opportunities to those of all backgrounds and identities. They will be encouraged to take advantage of existing opportunities for mentoring, professional development of transferrable skills, availability of trained Diversity and Inclusion Officers for the Research School of Physics, and a large proportion of local staff and students being members of the LGBTIQ Ally Network.

The FRIB Theory Alliance is seeking outstanding candidates for up to two FRIB Theory Fellows. One fellow will be hosted by MSU and the other by the Partner Institution listed below. The successful candidate(s) will conduct independent or collaborative research on theoretical nuclear structure, reactions, astrophysics, and/or fundamental symmetries relevant to the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). The FRIB Theory Alliance is a consortium of universities and national laboratories actively engaged in theoretical research in FRIB science. FRIB will be a new national user facility for nuclear science, funded by the DOE Office of Science and operated by Michigan State University.

The FRIB Theory Fellowship is a two-year position with the possibility of renewal for a maximum of five years. The initial stipend is $77k and this position has an annual travel budget of up to $5k. The FRIB Theory Fellows will be employees of Michigan State University with one fellow stationed at Michigan State University and the other fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The successful candidates must demonstrate great promise for high achievement in FRIB science. Past fellows have a track record of moving directly into open faculty or permanent staff positions.

Applicants should communicate their interest to a specific hosting institution. Hosting institutions and host contact information are:

Michigan State University: Filomena Nunes (nunes@frib.msu.edu)
Los Alamos National Laboratory: Ingo Tews (itews@lanl.gov)
