In this first phase of the MYRRHA project (2016 – 2024), the 100 MeV linear proton accelerator will be coupled to a proton target facility (PTF) for the production of (medical) radioisotopes and ISOL-applications. This facility is the first phase of ISOL@MYRRHA and therefore part of the EURISOL-DF strategy. The buildings and all auxiliary systems required to operate such facility, the so-called Balance of Plant (BOP), will be constructed at SCK•CEN site in Mol.

As PTF Lead Engineer you will be responsible for the technical management and the implementation of the PTF from the design to the construction and commissioning phases at the SCK•CEN site.
• You are the technical leader who manages and drives the design and implementation of the PTF and coordinates the technical contributions of the involved national and international partners (research and industry);
• you define and coordinate all technical aspects in view of preparing the construction phase of the PTF and ensure that the PTF requirements/targets are met;
• you define the technical tasks and delegate them amongst the PTF engineers, you empower them to carry out the tasks, you monitor the implementation of the tasks according to the scope and within time and budget;
• you manage the PTF technical interphases with the technical activities of related units;
• you ensure that the PTF safety requirements are met and that the PSAR deliverables are provided by closely collaborating with the Licensing Manager;
• you take care of the technical contacts with the partners and you define actions when appropriate;
• you ensure a regular reporting of the overall progress of the PTF technical activities to the head of the unit. Required qualifications
• Master degree in engineering sciences;
• proven experience (more than 5 years) in the technical coordination and implementation of nuclear projects with high technological content in an international context and with a large number of internal and external stakeholders;
• strong professional engineering background in an R&D environment;
• able to work in an R&D environment while meeting deadlines;
• a positive “can do” attitude; able to show commitment and to inspire others;
• pragmatic, dynamic, resistant to stress, rigorous, a team leader with coaching abilities and able to develop a strategic vision;

Postdoctoral Position in Nuclear Theory at the University of Zagreb

06 December 2017

The Faculty of Science University of Zagreb invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position within the Nuclear Theory Group at the Department of Physics. The position would begin in March 2018, and it will be embedded within a newly established Center of Excellence for the Theory of Quantum and Complex Systems and Lie Algebra Representation (QuantiXLie). The Nuclear Theory Group has a broad ranging programme in nuclear theory and nuclear astrophysics based on relativistic nuclear energy density functional. Candidates are expected to have experience in nuclear theory and/or nuclear astrophysics. It is expected that the focus of research will be on developments of density functional theory in relation to astrophysically relevant properties and processes involving exotic nuclei, r-process nucleosynthesis, and/or neutron star properties.

To formally apply and in case of any inquiries, applicants should contact Prof. Nils Paar (npaar@phy.hr). Applicants should submit before 22.12.2017 a curriculum vitae, short statement or research interests, PhD certificate, and citizenship certificate.

Postdoctoral Fellows: Network for Neutrinos, Nuclear Astrophysics, and Symmetries: Applications Due Date Dec 10, 2017

06 December 2017

The newly established NSF Hub N3AS -- Network for Neutrinos, Nuclear Astrophysics, and Symmetries – intends to make 2-3 postdoctoral fellow appointments for positions starting in fall 2018. N3AS is a multi-institutional collaboration linking eleven institutions: U. California Berkeley, U. California San Diego, U. Kentucky, Los Alamos National Laboratory, U. Minnesota, North Carolina State U., Northwestern U., Notre Dame U., Ohio U., U. Washington, and U. Wisconsin. N3AS research focuses on theory issues in neutrino and nuclear astrophysics; dense matter including the modeling of supernovae, neutron stars, and neutron star mergers; nucleosynthesis; and dark matter.

Successful applicants will spend two years resident at a host site, followed by a third year at one of the three N3AS centers (UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, U. Washington/INT). All appointments are made through UC Berkeley. The available host sites for the current search are Kentucky, Minnesota, Northwestern, Notre Dame, and Ohio University. The three-year appointments (depending on satisfactory performance) have an initial salary of $63K and include travel allowances, to enable Fellows to more easily collaborate among the participating institutions, as well as modest relocation allowances. More details on N3AS can be found at https://n3as.wordpress.com.

Applications will be reviewed and Fellow selections made by the N3AS PIs, Baha Balantekin, Joe Carlson, Vincenzo Cirigliano, Andre DeGouvea, George Fuller, Stefano Gandolfi, Susan Gardner, Wick Haxton, Dan Kasen, Jim Lattimer, Gail McLaughlin, Daniel Phillips, Madappa Prakash, Yong-Zhong Qian, Sanjay Reddy, and Rebecca Surman. Placement of the Fellows at the N3AS sites and centers will be done in consultation with the successful candidates. NA3S has important connections to other initiatives in nuclear and particle physics and astrophysics, including topical collaborations and major computation programs funded under SciDAC and the Exascale Challenge initiative.

Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. (on or after September 2015) in theoretical physics or astronomy and the ability to work productively within a diverse and collaborative research environment, producing and publishing original research, and defending that research effectively in seminars and scientific meetings.

Requested application materials: Please submit your CV, a publication list, a statement of research interest, and arrange for three letters of reference. In the research statement, please indicate the topics and N3AS institutions (sites and centers) that might be of interest to you, based on the descriptions found on the Network’s web site. Materials should be submitted online at AJO https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/10010.

To ensure full consideration, interested candidates are requested to submit their applications before the deadline of December 10, 2017.

For further inquiries please contact Wick Haxton (haxton [at] berkeley [dot] edu). Fellow benefits packages will be continuous over the three-year appointments, provided through UC Berkeley. UC Berkeley is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, or protected veteran status.
