Information about the research and the department
Do you work with fundamental or applied science? Can your research contribute to solutions that address challenges in health, energy or sustainability? Is your strength in experimental research, research instrument design, computational science or pure theory?

We seek an Associate Professor to the Department of Physics, who are willing to take responsibility for the continued progress and development of our Department’s scientific disciplines, teaching responsibilities and utilization commitments. We welcome applicants with diverse backgrounds!

The Physics Department has 250 employees including 40 faculty members, and carries out research within the areas of experimental and theoretical materials science, nanoscience and nanooptics; within biological physics, surface physics and theoretical physics, as well as within subatomic and plasma physics. Furthermore, we develop experimental methods in many of these areas, in particular within advanced optical and electron microscopy and spectroscopy. The Department has a very broad and interdisciplinary profile including activities driven by fundamental questions and curiosity, as well as by societal needs and development. The interdisciplinarity is manifested in the Department’s active involvement in many cross-departmental activities within Chalmers in the fields of energy, nanotechnology, materials and life science, and fundamental science, as well as through diverse industrial collaborations. Organizing research, teaching and outreach in such thematic clusters creates exceptional possibilities for collaboration in creative, dynamic and cross-disciplinary work environments at Chalmers. We also have access to world-class research infrastructure, including a clean room facility for advanced micro- and nanofabrication, a state-of-the-art materials analysis laboratory, and well-organized computing facilities.

Major responsibilities
The appointment as associate professor is a faculty position that requires documented scientific expertise. This means that the candidate must demonstrate excellent understanding of her/his research field, the ability to independently lead high quality research efforts, and the ability to attract external research funding, as well as provide proof that she/he is able to successfully supervise students. We also expect well-documented pedagogical competence, the potential to lead and develop research and teaching, and the proven ability to collaborate with external partners and stakeholders.

The recruited associate professor will be given the opportunity to design her/his unique and autonomous research profile. Additionally, the successful candidate will receive a support package with funding for at least one PhD student, relocation support and a leadership program.

Position summary
Full-time permanent employment

Qualifications
• A PhD degree in physics or a related area.
• Performed high-quality research.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.
• Demonstrated ability to work in international collaborations.
• Demonstrated pedagogical competence e.g. through her/his own teaching material, teaching experience, course evaluation material or similar.
• Demonstrated ability to attract external funding.
• Demonstrated supervision experience at both the MSc and PhD-level.
• Demonstrated contribution to utilization of research through for example a spin-off or similar is considered a merit.

The position of associate professor requires scientific expertise that is considerably higher than that required for a doctoral degree (corresponding to admission as docent) and at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education or corresponding expertise. You must be accustomed to teaching and be a skilled educator. For this reason, we place a great deal of emphasis on your pedagogical portfolio. Experience from performing academic research or qualified research and development in industry/the public sector is a requirement.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you must be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
