Summary

Combined RIKEN and FRIB Users Groups Meetings at the 3rd Joint Meeting of the APS Division of Nuclear Physics and the Physical Society of Japan
Thursday, October 15, 2009; Waikoloa, Hawaii

During the joint APS/JPS meeting in Hawaii, the User Groups of RIBF at RIKEN and FRIB held back-to-back users meetings in order to help both groups gain a better perspective on international opportunities, and gain better understanding how User Groups can operate effectively.

The RIKEN users meeting was first. There were many interesting talks on the experiments with the first radioactive beams, and on the prospects for the next year as the facility ramps up. About 100 users participated, with about a third from our FRIB community. There was then a refreshments break (provided by MSU/FRIB) and then the FRIB meeting followed. There was an update on the status of the project, and the path to the CDR. There was considerable discussion about how the FRIB users could contribute to the project. The FRIB meeting had about 70 participants, again with about a third of the people from the RIKEN/RIBF community.

Everyone agreed this kind of joint meeting was a big success and should be repeated in the future. It provided an excellent forum for meeting of our communities, exchanging ideas, building collaborations, and improving the effectiveness of both user groups. It was agreed that RIKEN provide the refreshments next time round!
