Message from Conveners

Dear FRIB user,

Sensitive decay spectroscopy will be one of the primary discovery probes at FRIB. It will characterize nuclear properties at the "frontiers" of the chart of nuclides where new phenomena are expected. The FRIB Radioactive Decay Station Working Group was formed to promote and facilitate the design and construction of experimental apparatus, which will take full advantage of the new and exciting opportunities provided by FRIB.

An efficient, state-of-the-art detection station(s) equipped with instruments capable of characterizing various forms of radiation such as gamma rays, conversion electrons, beta particles, protons, alpha particles and neutrons will be required for decay studies at FRIB. Its final implementation will be shaped by the vast experience gathered with existing decay spectroscopy stations and will be influenced by emerging technologies.

If you plan to carry out decay studies at FRIB we need your input to identify opportunities, challenges and priorities in the years leading up to FRIB to assure that the best possible detection system is constructed and ready for experiments as soon as FRIB becomes operational. Please, contact one of the conveners listed above if you would like to become a member of the group and actively participate in its work. The FRIB Equipment Meeting on the campus of Michigan State University on February 20-22, 2010 will be an excellent forum to share your ideas and voice your opinion.

Conveners: Call for Workshop Contributions

The FRIB decay station will be discussed during a one and a half hour session which will start at 10:30 am on Sunday, February 21. The session will consist of short presentations describing the most important components of the decay station and will be based on user contributions followed by a general discussion.

If your future research at FRIB requires a decay station and you would like to contribute to its design and construction, please, email us a one page write-up and two PowerPoint slides describing your ideas. In your description include brief physics motivation, technical overview, and current status of your project. Information about a cost estimate, funding, and collaboration members would be also helpful. Your contribution will be made available on our website. We will do our best to include all contributions in the program of the session but in view of very limited time some consolidation might be necessary. We anticipate that a follow up meeting dedicated exclusively to the FRIB decay station will take place later this year where all ideas will be discussed in detail.
